There are a lot of sports teams with the Wildcat nickname, but the University of Kentucky's mascot stands out, especially for those in the Big Blue Nation. Our mascot is a vivid representation of the Kentucky logo, complete with the menacing bobcat that is the UK Wildcat. The nickname became synonymous with the university in 1909 following a 6-2 football win over the University of Illinois. The head of the university military department told a group of students that the Kentucky team "fought like Wildcats". That characterization became popular and is now a part of UK athletics lore.
